Notable Features

Nationals Park Red Porch Section

Since the opening of the park in 2008, the Nationals have made many improvements. Some of the most notable improvements come with the expansion of the Red Porch Restaurant out in center field. New statues were added to honor Walter Johnson, Frank Howard, and Josh Gibson. The park was home to the 2015 NHL Winter Classic in front of 42,000 spectators. The Washington Capitals beat the Chicago Blackhawks during the game 3-2. A home win was only the second time that the Winter Classic’s home team has won this game.

Additional features to the ballpark include adding Cherry Blossoms beyond the left field bleachers. Cherry blossoms are synonymous with the nation’s capital, so this was a nice touch added. Fans will have to wait a bit after opening day to see these trees in full effect.

Many concerts have also taken place at the ballpark over the years. Some of the most famous artists include Billy Joel, Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, Jason Aldean, and One Direction. The biggest attendance crowed came from Taylor Swift who brought in a crowd of over 80,000 people. In 2008, Pope Benedict XVI celebrated mass at Nationals Park as well.
